Sampling Statement Before I became obsessed with shooting trees at night, I was obsessed with shooting other things at night. And before that, I was exploring what interested me in a broader way. This section is representative of what interested me and what inspired me pre-trees, and perhaps what will interest me post-trees – if there ever is a post-trees time. Within this section there are hints at future projects, especially the “Venice at night in the fog” shot along with the “Madrid Column at night” shot. There is something within them I want pursue, but those shots are few and far between, or at least that’s what I believe to be true. Who knows, maybe my obsession with trees is subverting my vision in that area and preventing those shots from coming into my consciousness. For example when I can’t shoot trees at night – as happens in a place like Venice or Madrid (I tried, but…), then I am compelled to focus on other subjects and states of being. Actually, that is true of the Maine Diffractions since there are no million dollar lighting packages on that small island with which to shoot trees at night and I was forced to work in a different direction – though related. You’ll notice there are very few people shots, which might suggest I’m not so interested in them – people or photographs of people. It’s not true and I predict more people shots to come! I just have to figure out how to make them unique, no small assignment with so many great people photos out there in the world. So stay tuned.
