Bio
Sue Bailey is a photographer based in New York City. Coming from Oregon and growing up in old growth forest areas along the Oregon coast, she combines her love of nature and her love of the city in much of her current work.
Her main focus for the past few years has been shooting the great trees and landscapes of New York City at night, often giving them a dramatic, museum diorama effect. She only uses available light. From there she expanded and created “Night Trees” series in other cities such as Washington, DC and Montreal. She will continue to explore tree portraits and landscapes in other cities.
Shooting at night has been Sue's passion for years, adding to other series that she is working on: “Oregon”, “Chinatown”, and “Red Laser” – all shot at night with available light. There are times when Sue shoots during the day – mostly nature on a remote island in Maine – and mostly “altered” in-camera to give a painterly feel – painting being her first love.
Sue always painted and drew and eventually pursued the Fine Arts on a college level, getting her BFA at Cooper Union School of Art in New York City. Painting and the arts still continue to inform her photography in an important way. She has done additional studies in photography at ICP, the International Center of Photography in New York City after a career at HBO working on some of the great shows in television. Sue has been included in various group shows and was featured in an article in National Geographic’s online magazine entitled: “The Singular Drama of New York Trees: Illuminated by the city lights, these trees take on a new life.”
